About UMN

United Mission to Nepal (UMN) strives to address the root causes of poverty as it serves the people in Nepal, especially those who are marginalised, downtrodden and living in poverty. Established in 1954, UMN is a cooperative effort between the people of Nepal and a large number of faith-based organisations from eleven countries.

Multicultural teams of Nepali nationals and volunteer expatriate staff work alongside our local partners in less developed areas, building partnerships that lead to healthy, strong, and empowered individuals, families, and communities.

UMN in its almost seventy years of service in Nepal, has prioritised and strongly emphasised on education for all, as key to breaking the cycle of poverty. Our early years of education work goes back to establishing the first girls’ school in Nepal – Mahendra Bhawan School in Kathmandu (1957), Gorkha Luintel/Amp Pipal School (1957), Gandaki Boarding School in Pokhara (1966) and the non-formal education projects in Jajarkot, Dailekh and Mugu in the 1980’s and 90’s.

Currently, UMN’s focuses in Education on child-friendly method of education and activity-based learnings. UMN actively lobbies for the fundamental rights of children in which we work through our partners and local government in influencing local level policies, school policies and training and equipping teachers to improve and ensure child-friendly education.

UMN also works in Good Governance, Health, Integral Development, Resilient Livelihoods and Peace & Protection.

Why Computer Labs

The Government of Nepal endorsed the Information Communication Technology (ICT) in Education Master Plan (2013 – 17) and the School Sector Education Plan (2021 – 2030). The main objective of introducing ICT in learning is to narrow down the digital gap between the children from poor and well-off families by developing ICT infrastructure, human resources, digital contents, and system enhancement. UMN’s main role is to contribute to the government plan, therefore, UMN, in partnership with EduTech Nepal, has been working to support to meet the ICT based learning related goals through establishing computer labs in public schools and training teachers and students on the use of ICT in learning. Over the last ten years, 64 computer labs have been established in the schools of Bajhang, Doti, Dhading, Kapilvastu, Morang, Rukum and Sunsari through our partnership with EduTech Nepal. The main purpose of this venture is to aid in providing quality education, accelerate their learning across different subjects in schools through ICT to the children from rural communities and thereby, addressing the root causes of poverty.
