About Himalayan Trust Nepal

Himalayan Trust Nepal (HTN) is a non-governmental organisation established to support the Government of Nepal and the people of Solukhumbu in education, health, culture, environment, and livelihood programmes through an inclusive, innovative and locally driven governance approach. Established as part of the work of Sir Edmund Hillary and his Sherpa friends in the Everest Region, HTN is dedicated to achieving community-led, sustainable mountain development in Solukhumbu District and wider Nepal. Honouring the Legacy of Mingma Norbu Sherpa, Reinhold Messner Mountain Foundation, Italy, Nepal Hilfe Tirol Austria, Nepal Kinderhilfe, Edutech Nepal, Lights for Kids Germany and many organizational and institutional donors and partners. Himalayan Trust has been actively working in educational development in Solukhumbu since its founding in the 1960s. The two-roomed aluminium-made building of Khumjung School is the first school of Himalayan Trust. Sir Ed himself built more than 27 schools throughout the Solukhumbu district from the Himalayan Trust and continued to support them. HTN has supported over 106 schools to provide equal and quality education in the same area. HTN aims to improve the quality of education in the local community schools, reduce the number of out-migrating students, promote local teachers, develop a child and gender friendly education system, provide education through computer technology, and help reduce rural poverty. More importantly, Himalayan Trust Nepal and New Zealand have partnered with EduTech Nepal to set up computer labs in the Solukhumbu schools to transform education through technology.

Work Area

Himalayan Trust Nepal has been implementing its programmes in Solukhumbu, Khotang, Okhaldunga and Dolakha districts.

Himalayan Trust Nepal works in seven rural municipalities and one municipality of Solukhumbu, and one municipality in each of Khotang, Okhaldunga, and Dolakha district.

Why Computer Labs

EduTech Nepal, Himalayan Trust Nepal and New Zealand have partnered with School Management Committees to implement the computer lab programme in community schools of Solukhumbu since 2018. Himalayan Trust is responsible for providing 50 per cent of the computer hardware cost. Himalayan Trust Nepal coordinates with schools, government organisations, and supporting partners, while EduTech Nepal provides computers, technical support and training for lab installation. The newly installed computer labs are equipped with branded Dell computers, the latest version of teaching materials, and virtual learning tools to enhance the learning process in the absence of teachers. Himalayan Trust's part of the funding is managed under the Quality Education Programme in Solukhumbu (QEPS) supported by Himalayan Trust New Zealand. In addition to community schools, Himalayan Trust and EduTech Nepal have also initiated the establishment of computer labs in monastery schools, aiming to bridge the digital divide and enhance education by providing access to digital resources, teaching new skills, and empowering communities to develop solutions to local problems. This investment in computer labs in rural Nepal can have significant social and economic benefits, including improving education and boosting economic growth.
