About Himalayan Trust

Sir Edmund and Louise Hillary founded the Himalayan Trust in the 1960s. Ever since then, they’ve inspired New Zealanders to give their time, money and support to help the people of Nepal through the Himalayan Trust. To Sir Ed, his greatest achievement was not climbing Everest but helping the people of Nepal.

It all began in the early 1960s when Sir Ed asked a Sherpa: “If there was anything I could do for the Sherpa people, what do you think that would be?” The Sherpa replied: “Our children have eyes, but they are blind and cannot see. We would like you to open their eyes by building a school in our village.” This touched Sir Ed’s heart and he immediately set about building the first school in Khumjung. He went on to build schools, hospitals and health clinics across the Solukhumbu region in the foothills of Everest.

The Himalayan Trust mission is to break the cycle of poverty by providing education to the people of Solukhumbu. Sir Ed's vision was to deliver a strong education programme to the Everest region of Nepal and secure a brighter future for as many children and young people as possible. Sir Ed knew that education, more than anything else, has the power to lift people out of poverty. Yet too many young people in the Everest region face a lifetime of disadvantage because they can’t get anything more than the most basic education.

Work Area - education projects

Himalayan Trust has been implementing its programmes in Solukhumbu, Khotang, Okhaldunga and Dolakha districts.

Himalayan Trust works in seven rural municipalities and one municipality of Solukhumbu, and one municipality in each of Khotang, Okhaldunga, and Dolakha district.

Why Computer Labs

Sir Ed was always passionate about utilising technology to solve problems. From driving farm tractors to the South Pole, to using aeroplanes to support building projects in remote Himalayan villages, he knew that technology has the power to create lasting solutions.

Ed would be proud of The Himalayan Trust NZ’s work with Edutech Nepal to bring computer labs to Solukhumbu as they are an important part of the future:
  1. Computer labs can bridge the digital divide: Access to modern technology and education is crucial in today's world, and computer labs provide a way to access global resources in remote areas like Solukhumbu.
  2. Enhancing learning: Computer labs provide access to a wide range of resources that can enhance learning and make education more engaging and effective.
  3. Developing essential skills: Computer labs offer an opportunity for students to develop essential computer skills that are increasingly necessary in today's job market - even in the Himalayas.
  4. Enabling career opportunities: Students who acquire computer skills can pursue careers in fields which were previously unavailable to them.
Overall, computer labs are essential for ensuring that the next generation of community leaders have the technological literacy to help these local communities thrive.
