About KISC EQUIP

Kathmandu International Study Centre (KISC) was established in 1987. It is owned by a local NGO called Human Development and Community Services (HDCS), working in three main sectors of health, education, and community development.

KISC’s mission is to provide excellent education, primarily for the International Mission Community and Nepali School communities, based on KISC values. Through KISC’s international K-12 school and EQUIP teacher training programme, students and staff will positively impact their world.  It supports Nepali school communities by providing teacher training and various support programmes through its teacher training wing called Education Quality Improvement Programme (EQUIP). KISC EQUIP was established in 2007 through a partnership agreement with the Ministry of Education. KISC EQUIP seeks to train Nepali schools with the tools and skills necessary to foster a learning environment that supports teachers and their students to develop as creative and critical thinkers who can be self-reliant and life-long learners. KISC EQUIP partners with both rural and urban Nepali schools that desire to rise above the many challenges of the current education system in Nepal.

Work Area

West Rukum is one of the 10 districts of Karnali Province which is the least developed province in Nepal with vast geographic and climatic diversity. Though it is the largest province of Nepal covering 27,984 km2 (18.97% of the total area of Nepal), it has the lowest population density (60 people per square kilometre) of any province in Nepal which creates significant challenges for the cost-effective provision of infrastructure and services. Karnali province is one of the most backward areas of Nepal. The Human Development Index is 0.445 as per the Nepal Human Development Report 2014, and it is the lowest compared to other parts of the country (0.602 national HDI). Topographically, the province is divided into four main regions starting from the high Himalayan Region, the Mahabharat region, mid mountains, valleys, and Chure in the south. The land topography is challenging leading to the lack of transportation, electricity, communication, and internet facilities. According to the National Census 2011, 51.2% of people are multidimensionally poor and 40% of people are below the poverty line. The literacy rate of females in Karnali Province is below the national average (The national average is 75.4% and the average in Karnali is only 59.1%).  Similarly, the economic profile of Karnali also is the lowest compared to other provinces which account for only 4% of national GDP and GVA mainly due to the low population, challenging topography, fragmented production, and limited transport connectivity.

Why Computer Labs

KISC EQUIP aims to transform the school community through quality education. For this, EQUIP supports the achievement of the national education strategy by equipping teachers to effectively implement the National Curriculum of Nepal by providing them with the tools and skills necessary to develop problem solving and creative thinking as well as good character in students. Since MoE has introduced ICT as subject as well as ICT as a tool for instruction in school education, some of the strategies of SSDP (2016- 2023) are to establish an ICT enabling learning environment with the provision of ICT infrastructure and teaching-learning materials for pedagogy, establish ICT learning centres, trainer teachers on the use of ICT in teaching and learning, etc.

However, ICTs have not been used as a way of acquiring new knowledge and skills in schools of Nepal because of the limited access to ICTs, inadequate funding, lack of basic infrastructure, lack of qualified personnel and lack of policy formulation and implementation (Dhital, 2018). Considering ICT skills as one of the competencies of teachers in Teacher competency Framework Nepal and ICT skills as twenty first century skills, KISC EQUIP has been providing training on integrating ICT in day-to-day teaching and learning over the years. As mentioned by Dhital, (2018), our partner schools don’t have proper ICT labs to implement EQUIP’s training effectively. In this situation, partnership with EduTech, a like-minded organisation with a vision to transform education through technology has made a wider impact to the school community. Schools not only implement ICT Integration in teaching and learning but also the students, teaching staff, non-teaching staff and local community have access to ICT. Therefore, KISC EQUIP has invested in computer hardware, soft skills and support for education, specifically computer labs.
